Wee Willetts Off To A Flying Start

A new initiative from Bondhay Golf Club has brought together groups of young golfers from Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire to play in a competition supported by European Tour professional Daniel Willett.

The “Wee Willetts” – boys and girls all aged between 4 and 16, from Bondhay, Phoenix and Sitwell Park Golf Clubs will be playing a set of fun competitions over 9 months culminating in a final awards presentation in November.

Over 27 children took part in the first competition, a texas scramble played on Bondhay’s Par 3 Academy Course in glorious spring sunshine. Each of the teams comprised of a junior from each club, with their first piece of teamwork deciding their own team name. This lead to some great choices such as “The 3 Musketeers”, “ABC”, “Golf Buds”, “Playing Fore Par” and “Out of Bounds”.

The Wee Willetts project is being developed under the watchful eye of Head Teaching PGA Professional Justin Fores from Bondhay Golf Club assisted by fellow PGA Professionals Rebecca Davies (Bondhay) and Julie Chandler (Phoenix) and Junior Organisers Glynn Perry (Phoenix) and Michelle O’Rourke (Sitwell Park).

Justin commented “The Wee Willetts is a fun and exciting way for the youngsters to develop their golfing skills as well as learning more about rules and course etiquette. Playing with juniors from other clubs and visiting other clubs promotes the key attributes of golf like honesty, respect, co-ordination and self-motivation. I hope that this pilot project in 2010 will be very successful and that we will be able to invite more local clubs to take part next year”.

The Wee Willett competition adds to Bondhays growing junior golf calendar and underlines its work in the community as part of being a English Golf Union GolfMark accredited club and recognised Golf Foundation Golf Roots Centre.
